Singapore healthcare - how we keep healthcare affordable.

Singapore uses the concept of :
  • Self-reliance [ Medisave and Medishield]
  • Government support [Medifund,Restructured hospitals,government subsidies and Means-testing]
  • Community support [ Working with community organisations]
To make sure that healthcare remains affordable. Parts of these approaches are linked to our 3M approach - Medisave, Medishield and Medifund. Want to know more about the 3M approach?

The role played by self-reliance in singapore is important but there are other wat to keep the healthcare affordable- a healthy lifestyle and community support.

In recent years, self-reliance has become more importantas healthcare services have changed over the year in sinapore so as to meet the changing demands of the population. the government to give generous health subsidies or taxes would increase. individual thus pay part of medical medical expenses through medisave and medishield schemes. there arecomplusory and voluntary scheme to help us pay for medical and hospitalisation expenses which develop personal responsibility. the government will not burdened with huge expenditure as in the welfare state system of britain.

Adopting a healthy lifestyle is one way of fighting the rising costs of health care. if one has good health, one will spend less on treatment. so , regular physical excercise and a well-balanced diet are emphasised. bad habit such as smoking and driking are discouraged. adults are encouraged to go for sreening programme for early detection of diseases such as diabetes, heart dieases etc. since further medical costs will rise, it is thus necessary for every citizen to stay fit and healthy.

coummunity support is another way of providing healthcare services, especially for the poor and aged. voluntary welfare organisations are given grants to run community hospitals, nursing home and day rehabilitaton centres. the aged can also take responsibilityfor their own health through a 'helping hand' approach - involving community hospitals nursing home and day care centres. it isn ot feasible fo the government to run all the healthcare services.
