1) Since people knows that there is meritocracy, work for reward, they will want to work as much as possible so as to earn the reward. Thus,by working hard, the people will help contribute to the economy. Thus, a success

2) With leaders being dishonest, they will do everytihng that benefits themselves and not for the nation. However, with leaders being capable and honest, they will use their intelligence to bring a better life to the nation.Hence,a success

To Emilio and Zheng Ying:

You answers are on the right track but you have not asked yourself: Why? So what? How? enough.
(1)
For instance - WHY do people want to work to earn a reward?
"they will want to work as much as possible so as to earn the reward."

(2) However, with leaders being capable and honest, they will use their intelligence to bring a better life to the nation.

HOW will the capable leaders use their intelligence to bring a better life to the nation?

WHAT are some of the things that capable leaders will make use of their intelligence to do?

SO WHAT if these things are done by the capable leaders - what sort of success will that bring to Singapore and in what areas?

Principles of Governance :

1. Meritocracy - It is the key part of 'reward for work & work for reward'. For example, people get rewarded for their hard work
& talents, regardless of
race, religion & socio-economic background. This means that people are given an equal opportunity to achieve their best. Hence, everyone was encouraged to do well in the principle of meritocracy.

2. Leadership - Honest & capable leaders are needed to maintain stability in the country. For example, these leaders have to do what is right & not what is popular among the people. They have to also meet the peoples' needs to ensure the stable Singapore. Without such potential leaders, Singapore might not come to be successful as it is today. Hence, honest & capable leaders are indeed important to maintain a country.

3. Anticipate Change & Stay Relevant - The decisions of the government have to be forward-looking. For example, this is to ensure that we are prepared for any form of hurdles in the future, so that we will not suffer. Hence, being ahead in planning for the future will indeed be helpful.

4. 'A Stake for Everyone, Opportunities for All' - It is to have a say in the decision-making, which develops a greater sense of belonging to the country. For example, feedback sessions are conducted in conjunction with major projects of Singapore. By that, the people were able to raise their opinions to the government. Hence, the people had an equal chance to feedback to part of Singapore's project, which develops greater sense of belonging to the country.

1)Meritocracy- People would be encouraged to work hard because they know that they would be rewarded for their hardwork with things such as scholarships and bursaries.Hence, they would strive harder to contribute to the society.People want rewards such as that so that they do not need to pay their schooling fees and the goverment would help subsidise or pay for it like studying overseas or in a local school.

2)Leadership- The country needs a good and capable leader who can make the right choices so that the country would not face corruption and can prosper. The leader would not abuse their power and would not do things to benefit themselves and do not make choices which are only popular among the people but for the country.Being capable and intelligent would help them be farsighted to solve the crisis or problems that the country would face in the future.

1)Leadership- In order to maintain stability in a county and in the government, we need capable and upright leaders to make the right decisions for the country. They must do what is right and not what the people want. Without these leaders, there would be chaos within the government as no one is there to make the decisions and do what is best for the country. Capable leaders will use their good leadership to transform their country into a country that has a good reputation. They will also do their best to help boost their country's economy like for example, Singapore had attracted the attention of many after building the IRs and also organizing the F1 race. These events and buildings caused many to visit Singapore and also helped in Singapore's economy. By making the right decisions, the leaders have improved the lives of the people and also the economy of Singapore. These have made lives easier for Singaporeans as they have a comfortable and stable country to live in. Thus, capable leaders with good leadership are important to a country.

2)Anticipate change and stay relevant- The decisions made by the government need to be forward looking. The government need to come up with ideas that helps to prepare Singapore for the future. NEWater is an example of how the government prepares for the future. Presently, Singapore depends on Malaysia for its water supply. The two water agreements will end in 2011 and 2061. However, Singapore has found alternative water supplies in order to be self-sufficient by producing NEWater and desalinated water. Singapore would be prepared when a country disagree to supply water to Singapore. Singapore has to be open to new ideas and be willing to take risks. By taking the risk, we might find new alternatives that could help improve Singapore and prepare for the worst. Thus everyone should anticipate change and stay relevant.

3.) Reward for work and work for reward- Meritocracy is a key part of the principle 'Reward for work, work for reward.' Meritocracy means a system that rewards hard work and talent. When people are rewarded based on their abilities and hard work, they are encouraged
to do well. For example, scholarships and merit bursary schemes rewards student that have worked hard. By rewarding the people with rewards, they will continue to work harder in order to gain rewards. Also, they could help to contribute to the country. This opportunity give everyone in society an equal opportunity to achieve their best and be rewarded for their performance, regardless of race, religion and socio-economic background. Thus, the rewards encourages all ages to work hard and help to contribute to the country's economic to have a successful country.

4) A stake for everyone, opportunities for all- Having a say in decision-making develops in people a greater sense of belonging to the country. More opportunities have been created to involve the people in decision-making. For example, the government consulted the people on the issue and having a casino as part of an Integrated Resort. Many have voiced their support and concerns about the government's proposal. This will allow the public to not feel that their feelings have been neglected and not taken into consideration. Involving the public in the decision-meeting creates a platform for us to give ideas and share our views with others. Thus, everyone will have an opportunity to speak up and agree to the decisions made. Everyone will also be satisfied and able to live in peace in Singapore.

1)Since there is meritocracy in Singapore, also known as work for reward or reward for work, the peolpe of Singapore would be willing to work hard for Singapore as they wish to be rewarded for their results and not other things like race or religion.Since there are many that work hard, they would be able to benefit Singapopre and would lead to Singapore's sucess.

2)Having capable and honest leaders would lead to Singapore's sucess as with this quilities the people of Singapore would give their full support to their leader. This is because firstly, having capable leaders they would make good decitions that would only benefit the country.Secondly, have honest leaders would mean that they are not corruped and truely care for the citizens of Singapore.Due to these two,the people of Singapore would trust their leader and give their full support to their leader. Therefore,Having capable and honest leaders would lead to Singapore's sucess.

1) Meritocracy
Meritocracy is the principle of working hard for reward and be rewarded for hard work. When the citizens are rewarded based on their own abilities & hard work. They will be encouraged to do well in society and thus contribute more for rewards. This is brought about by giving Merit Bursary Schemes that reward the top 10% and 25% of students in schools and education institutes. Therefore, meritocracy helps to give everyone in society an equal opportunity to achieve his or her best and be rewarded for their performance, regardless of race, religion and backgrounds. Hence, everyone would agree and work towards meritocracy, hence a success.

2) Leadership
Leadership is the courage to direct people towards success. Honest and capable leaders are needed to maintain stability in the govt. and to make the right choices for the country. The moral courage and integrity to do what is right and not what is popular with the people. When leaders lead with the thoughts of the people, the country will succeed as the people will support their leaders in doing what is right.

3) Anticipate Change and Stay Relevant
In making decisions, the government needs to be forward-looking. Forward-looking means planning for or anticipating possible future events and conditions. The government needs to be forward-looking to make sure that Singapore will not suffer in the future. This can be done by analyzing any future events that might be a problem for Singapore, and creating plans to minimize the effect of that particular problem. NEWater is an example of how the government prepares water supply for Singapore in the future. Singapore is currently depending on Malaysia for its water supply, the contracts will end in 2011 and 2061. However, Singapore has managed to find an alternative in water supply, which is by producing NEWater. Therefore, by being forward-looking, Singapore will meet success.

4) A Stake for Everyone, Opportunities for All
In managing the country, the government always tries to provide everyone an equal opportunity, and equal rights. This is important, as by providing every citizen equal rights, the citizens will slowly develop a sense of belonging in the country and nationalism. For example in 2004, the government consulted the people on the issue of having a casino as part of an Integrated Resort. During feedback sessions, many people voiced their support and concerns about the government’s proposal. By voicing their personal opinions, they will develop a sense of belonging. Therefore, the government will receive more support and will finally meet success.

Meritocracy
-A system that rewards hard work and talent. When people are rewarded based on their abilities and hard work, they are encouraged to do well. More people will be motivate to work harder to receive the reward. Also, they can contribute to the country. Example of the reward is the Edusave Scholarship and Merit Bursary. This is reward to students who perform exceptionally well in their studies and co-curricular activities. This opportunity give everyone in the society an equal opportunity to achieve their best and get reward for their good performance, regardless of race, religion and socio-economic background.

Leadership
- We need honest and capable leaders to maintain stability in the government and to make the right decisions for the country.
They must have moral courage and integrity to do what is right and not what is popular with the people. They must also not do everything that only benefit themselves but to benefit the nation, the country. The law deals with leaders guilty of dishonest behavior. By making the right decisions, they improved the lives of Singaporeans and the economic of the Singapore. This ensures that Singaporeans have a stable country to live in. Singapore needs good leadership not only in the government, but also in every segment of Singapore's society. For example, under Mr Liu Thai Ker, the former chairman of the National Arts Council (NAC) leadership, local talents ha
Events such as the Singapore Writers' Festival and the Singapore Arts Festival were organised to promote the appreciation and the arts in Singapore.

Anticipate Change and Stay Relevant
- The decisions made by the government need to be forward-looking. They need to make plans to prepare Singapore for the future. For instance, the NEWater. It ensures self-sufficiency in water supply. Presently, Singapore depends on Malaysia depends on Malaysia for its water supply. Its two water agreements with Malaysia will end in 2011 and 2061.
However, Singapore has found alternatives water supplies in order to be self-sufficient by producing NEWater and desalinated water. The government communicated with the people to assure them that NEWater is safe for drinking through various channels such as schools, newspaper and the Internet. Second example is the Integrated Resorts (IR). Tourism has always been an important component of the Singapore's economy. However, in the recent years, the tourism sector faced competition with more countries in Asia developing major tourist attractions. To capture the growing market, Singapore needs to improve the tourist industry. In April 2005, the government decided to build two IRs at Marina Bay and Sentosa. This is to ensure that more visitors will come and visit Singapore. With more visitors, Singapore's economy will eventually grow. Finally is taking risks. To be forward looking, Singapore has to be open to new ideas by coming up with creative and innovative ideas. Every Singaporean needs to upgrade their knowledge and skills to stay employable and contribute to the nation.

A Stake for Everyone, Opportunities for All'
- Having a say in decision-making develops in people a greater sense of belonging to the country. More opportunities have been created to involve the people in decision-making. For example in 2004, the government consulted the people on the issue of having a casino as partly on an IR. During feedback sessions, many people voiced their support and concerns about the government's proposal. This will ensure that the public not to feel that their feelings have been neglected and not taken into consideration. The government then considered the concerns raised and decided to go ahead with the setting up of a casino as part of an IR. Policy decisions are made to serve the needs of the nation.
These decisions may change to suit the needs of the people and the nation over time. However, they still need to be made based on the principles of governance.

2)Honest and capable leaders- meant that the leaders have to be guided by principles and do what is right instead of what is popular. For example, they have to have integrity and not accept bribery. This will ensure there is stability as the leaders ensure everything is fair, and the citizens will support them.Hence a success.

4)'A stake for everyone, opportunities for all'-

Meritocracy -
Since there's reward for work , people will strive harder , give their best , take reward as target , and go for it . Time after time , they'll start to compete with each other , individuals will keep on giving their best , go beyond their limits. S'pore will then start to produce more and more talented people , generation after generation . Eventually , S'pore will be a success as they have lots of capable people .

Leadership - By having a capable leader leading S'pore , managing S'pore , we do not need to worry that much as the Leader will know what to do , when to do at the appropriate time . Also , by having a Honest leader , it will do each and every citizens good as the leader has the integrity , does not take what he shouldn't be , not doing what he shouldn't be , etc . Therefore , it will bring S'pore to a greater height .

1)Meritocracy
- Meritocracy means a system that rewards talents. When people knows that there will be a reward, they will work extra hard as they will know that alot of people will fight for their very best to achieve that reward. This will create a trend and there will be more and more talented people in Singapore. Thus, this will be the result of good governance.

2)Good Leadership
- Good leadership means doing what is right rather than what is popular. People will trust the government when there are good leaders as they believe that the good leaders will give them a better life. Good leaders will take good care of the citizens and not be corrupted. Without good leaders, there will be tension within Singapore and there will not be peace. The citizens will not doubt what the government is doing as they trust that what the government is doing will be beneficial to them and to the country.Hence, good governance is achieved when there is good leadership.

Principle of Governance:
1)Meritocracy: It is a system that rewards hard work and talent. No one is the discriminated. As people are rewarded based on talent and not on race, no one will be unhappy. People would then be willing to work hard and S’pore will then advance quickly and successfully.

2)Leadership:
Leadership is doing what is right rather than what is popular to maintain a stable country. Leaders must have moral courage and integrity to make the correct decisions. Making correct decisions are important as they are the leaders leading the country into stability. Therefore, with leaders making the correct decisions, the country would not face any corruptions and with no corruptions, this means that the leaders had make the correct decision, proving their leadership skills.

1)Meritocracy- It is a system that rewards people. When people who work hard are rewarded, they will be motivated to work harder,so as to achieve recognition and employment in higher paid jobs. Hence, meritocracy helps to give everybody equal opportunities to achieve their best and be rewarded for their performance regardless of race, religion and economic background.

2)Leadership- Having moral courage and integrity to do what is right and not popular with people. With good leadership, people will trust the government,as they believe that they will do their best for them and help to improve their living conditions. Then they will support the government, maintaining stability within the country and thus achieving good governance.

3)Staying relevant and anticipating change- Decisions made by the government need to be forward looking and anticipating future challenges. With leaders who are foward looking, future challenges and needs are met. Possible problems are addressed and solutions are provided, but reduces the amount of damage and harm done to the people's living conditions. It also increases security of the people,so that the country can continue to develop without major disruption and therefore, good governance is achieved.

4)Giving everyone a stake and opportunities for all-Involving everyone in decision making. when people are able to make decisions during feedback sessions, many of them are able to voice out their support and concerns about government's proposals. Therefore, they will feel that their suggestions are heard.

Thank you for posting.( At least most of you have).

You need to tweak your answers address the question all the time:
The question is on how each Principle of governance is important and how it leads to Singapore succeeding or doing well.

Ask yourself - Have you answered this question for all paragraphs?
The difference between a level 2 answer that gets a fail or just pass grade and one that scores a distinction is whether you have explained sufficiently to answer the question.

1)meritocracy.
When people are rewarded for their handwork and capabilities, more young people are encouraged to do well as they have a chance to get scholarships and bursarys where they can further their studies. When people are recognised for their effort put in, they will be encouraged to do better. When this happens, more people will strive their best to work hard. Also, Everyone will have equal opportunities.

2)leadership.
A good leader make wise decisions for its fellow citizens, not to accept bribery but bring justice to all. Citizens will then be respectful to the government leaders and support them. Country will then prosper. With this, there will be success in Singapore.

3)staying relevant. anticipate changes.
The government is forward-looking. It means thinking for Singapore's future. They think of ways to improve Singapore's economy and have soloutions to Singapore's challenges. It also means accepting changes. Citizens will then not sufferbut will be able to change with the situation. Thus, became success for Singapore.

4)stake for everyone. opportunities for all.
Citizens have a greater sense of belonging to the country. Everyone is treated equally and there will be a chance for every citizens to excel. Opportunities are fairly distributed. Each citizen will get to have a chance to do what they want. Everyone can choose their future. Citizens have chances to voice out their feedbacks and opinions, to improve on Singapore facilities etc. Thus, the government take into account what the citizens have said and think of ways to improve on it. 1. Meritocracy is a system that rewards hard work and talent. This encourages people to do well. For example, students who perform well in their academics are rewarded. As Meritocracy gives people an equal opportunity to achieve their best to earn the reward, people tend to work hard and compete with one another. Hence, there will be more talented people contributing in the society.

2.Leadership - Capable and honest leaders can help to set a good role model for the citizens and help to make better decisions to benefit the nation. They will then gain respect from the country and trust will be built between the leaders and the citizens. This also means that their decisions made for the country would be easily accepted and obeyed. Hence, there will be peace in the country.

3. Anticipate change and stay relevant - The decisions made by the govern has to be forward-looking and they have to be open to new ideas and willing to take risks. This will help the country in many ways such as lack of resources. Newater is one example how the govern made forward-looking decisions by ensuring that there will be sufficient drinking water for the country. By making decisions like that, it will help the country to prevent sudden crisis.

4. A stake for everyone, opportunities for all - Providing people with a say in decision-making helps develop a greater sense of belonging to the country. This will also help improve the country through the feedback given and also help in the communication between the leaders and the citizens. The leaders can also receive the concerns from the citizens and solve it very quickly.
