My comments are in capital letters and brackets. Do take a look - address these queries I have and improve on your explanation - you can use these improved explanations for your final essay.

1) Since people knows that there is meritocracy, work for reward, they will want to work as much as possible so as to earn the reward. Thus,by working hard, the people will help contribute to the economy. Thus, a success. (Improve on this by – how will they contribute to the economy? Weave in an example for meritocracy.)

2) With leaders being dishonest, they will do everything that benefits themselves and not for the nation. However, with leaders being capable and honest, they will use their intelligence to bring a better life to the nation. (HOW?) Hence,a success

Principles of Governance :
1. Meritocracy - It is the key part of 'reward for work & work for reward'. For example, people get rewarded for their hard work
& talents, regardless of
race, religion & socio-economic background. This means that people are given an equal opportunity to achieve their best.(SO HOW DOES THIS LEAD TO SINGAPORE’S SUCCESS?) Hence, everyone was encouraged to do well in the principle of meritocracy. (SO WHAT?)
(To improve)
2. Leadership - Honest & capable leaders are needed to maintain stability in the country. For example, these leaders have to do what is right & not what is popular among the people.(SO WHAT?) They have to also meet the peoples' needs to ensure the stable Singapore.(How are people’s needs met? What sort of success will be brought to Singapore?) Without such potential leaders, Singapore might not come to be successful as it is today. Hence, honest & capable leaders are indeed important to maintain a country. (To improve)

3. Anticipate Change & Stay Relevant - The decisions of the government have to be forward-looking. For example, this is to ensure that we are prepared for any form of hurdles in the future, so that we will not suffer.(HOW COME? WHY SO?) Hence, being ahead in planning for the future will indeed be helpful.(HOW IS IT HELPFUL?) (To improve. Provide an example with explanation.)

4. 'A Stake for Everyone, Opportunities for All' - It is to have a say in the decision-making [Unclear – who is involved in the decision making?], which develops a greater sense of belonging to the country. For example, feedback sessions are conducted in conjunction with major projects of Singapore.[What major projects are you referring to?] By that, the people were able to raise their opinions to the government.[SO WHAT? HOW DOES THIS LEAD TO SINGAPORE’S SUCCESS? WHAT MAKES THIS AN IMPORTANT PRINCIPLE OF GOVERNANCE?] Hence, the people had an equal chance to feedback to part of Singapore's project, which develops greater sense of belonging to the country.[SO WHAT? HOW WILL THIS MAKE THE NATION STRONGER?]

1)Meritocracy- People would be encouraged to work hard because they know that they would be rewarded for their hardwork with things such as scholarships and bursaries. Hence, they would strive harder to contribute to the society. [SO WHAT? HOW DOES THIS BENEFIT SOCIETY?] People want rewards such as that so that they do not need to pay their schooling fees and the goverment would help subsidise or pay for it like studying overseas or in a local school.[SO WHAT? WHAT WILL PEOPLE THEN DO THAT WILL LEAD TO SINGAPORE’S SUCCESS?] (To improve)

2)Leadership- The country needs a good and capable leader who can make the right choices so that the country would not face corruption and can prosper. [WHY WILL THE ABSENCE OF CORRUPTION LEAD TO PROSPERITY?] The leader would not abuse their power and would not do things to benefit themselves and do not make choices which are only popular among the people but for the country. Being capable and intelligent would help them be farsighted to solve the crisis or problems that the country would face in the future.[SO WHAT?] (NOT BAD BUT YOU CAN STILL IMPROVE BY ANWERING MY PROBING QUESTIONS)

1)Leadership- In order to maintain stability in a county and in the government, we need capable and upright leaders to make the right decisions for the country. They must do what is right and not what the people want. Without these leaders, there would be chaos within the government as no one is there to make the decisions[WRONG – THERE WILL BE DECSIONS MADE BUT….THINK] and do what is best for the country. Capable leaders will use their good leadership to transform their country into a country that has a good reputation.[SO WHAT? HOW DOES THIS BENEFIT THE NATION SINGAPORE] They will also do their best to help boost their country's economy[CHANGE THIS SENTENCE TO BE ABOUT DECISION-MAKING] like for example, Singapore had attracted the attention of many after building the IRs and also organizing the F1 race. These events and buildings caused many to visit Singapore and also helped in Singapore's economy.[HOW?] By making the right decisions, the leaders have improved the lives of the people and also the economy of Singapore. These have made lives easier for Singaporeans as they have a comfortable and stable country to live in.[OK – CORRECT] Thus, capable leaders with good leadership are important to a country.[NOT BAD BUT CAN BE IMPROVED BY ANSWERING MY QUESTIONS]

2)Anticipate change and stay relevant- The decisions made by the government need to be forward looking. The government needs to come up with ideas that help to prepare Singapore for the future.[WHY IS THIS SO IMPORTANT?WHY MUST SINGAPORE PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE?] NEWater is an example of how the government prepares for the future. Presently, Singapore depends on Malaysia for its water supply. The two water agreements will end in 2011 and 2061. However, Singapore has found alternative water supplies in order to be self-sufficient by producing NEWater and desalinated water. Singapore would be prepared when a country [MALAYSIA] disagree to supply water to Singapore. Singapore has to be open to new ideas and be willing to take risks. By taking the risk, we might find new alternatives that could help improve Singapore and prepare for the worst.[SO WHAT? HOW WILL THIS HELP SINGAPORE SUCCEED AND SURVIVE?] Thus everyone should anticipate change and stay relevant.

3.) Reward for work and work for reward- Meritocracy is a key part of the principle 'Reward for work, work for reward.' Meritocracy means a system that rewards hard work and talent. When people are rewarded based on their abilities and hard work, they are encouraged
to do well. For example, scholarships and merit bursary schemes rewards student that have worked hard. By rewarding the people with rewards, they will continue to work harder in order to gain rewards. Also, they could help to contribute to the country.[REWRITE THESE 2 SENTENCES TO SHOW THAT MERITOCRACY LEADS TO CONTRIBUTION TO COUNYTRY] This opportunity give everyone in society an equal opportunity to achieve their best and be rewarded for their performance, regardless of race, religion and socio-economic background. Thus, the rewards encourage all ages to work hard and help to contribute to the country's economic to have a successful country.[OK – THIS MAKES SENSE – IMPROVE ON THE EARLIER PARTS]

4) A stake for everyone, opportunities for all- Having a say in decision-making develops in people a greater sense of belonging to the country. More opportunities have been created to involve the people in decision-making. For example, the government consulted the people on the issue and having a casino as part of an Integrated Resort. Many have voiced their support and concerns about the government's proposal. This will allow the public to not feel that their feelings [VIEWS] have been neglected and not taken into consideration. Involving the public in the decision-meeting creates a platform for us to give ideas and share our views with others. Thus, everyone will have an opportunity to speak up and agree to the decisions made. Everyone will also be satisfied and able to live in peace in Singapore. [ IF CITIZENS ARE INVOLVED IN THE NATION’S DECISION MAKING – HOW WILL THEY FEEL? HOW WILL THIS BENEFIT SINGAPORE?]
